2006-2007 Season Summary
Influenza Surveillance Report for MMWR Week 4
The flu activity level for the week ending January 27, 2007 is widespread. This is the first week of the season that widespread activity has been reported. Widespread activity indicates that at least half of the regions are experiencing an increase in ILI and lab-confirmed (by culture) flu has been identified in those regions.
The DSHS laboratory isolated influenza A/H1 in specimens collected during week 4 from Bell, Bexar, Brooks, Smith, and Starr Counties. Influenza B/Malaysia/2506/2004-like was isolated in specimens from Bell and Bexar Counties. Influenza B/Shanghai/361/2002-like was isolated in a specimen from Bexar County. Scott and White Laboratory reported culture confirmed influenza A from Brazos, Grimes, and McLennan Counties and culture confirmed influenza B from Bell County. The Air Force Institute for Operational Health (AFIOH) reported culture confirmed flu A from Sheppard AFB (Wichita County) during week 4.
Reports were received from all 11 Health Service Regions (HSRs) for week 4. HSRs 1, 2/3, 4/5N, 7, 8, and 11 reported an increase in flu activity from the previous week. For a map of Health Service Regions, please visit the following website:

No institutional outbreaks or school closures were reported for week 4.
Seventy-one sentinel providers reported influenza-like illness (ILI) for week 4. Of all patient visits during this week, 5.71% were due to ILI. The baseline for Texas is 3.71%. The baseline is the mean percentage of patient visits for ILI during non-influenza weeks for the previous three seasons plus two standard deviations.
