2006-2007 Season Summary
Influenza Surveillance Report for MMWR Week 51
The flu activity level for the week ending December 23, 2006 is “regional”. Regional activity indicates that 2 or more but less than half of the regions are experiencing an increase in ILI and lab-confirmed (by culture) flu has been identified in those regions.
Flu reporting for week 51 was limited due to the holidays.
The DSHS laboratory isolated influenza A (all H1) in specimens collected during week 51 from Bexar, Dallas, Galveston, and Tarrant Counties. Influenza B (all Malaysia/2506/2004-like) was isolated in specimens from Bexar and Starr Counties. Scott and White reported isolating flu A in residents of Bell County and Brazos County and flu B in residents of McLennan County and Hill County. HSR 1 reported culture confirmed flu B from Randall County. The Air Force Institute for Operational Health (AFIOH) reported no culture confirmed flu during week 51.
Reports were received from HSRs 1, 2/3, 4/5N, 7, 8, 9/10, and 11 for week 51. All HSRs reported limited flu activity; however none of the regions reported an increase in flu activity from the previous week. For a map of Health Service Regions, please visit the following website:

No institutional outbreaks or school closures were reported for week 51.
Sixty-four sentinel providers reported influenza-like illness (ILI) for week 51. Of all patient visits during this week, 5.02% were due to ILI. The baseline for Texas is 3.71%. The baseline is the mean percentage of patient visits for ILI during non-influenza weeks for the previous three seasons plus two standard deviations.
