Arbovirus Surveillance Program

About Us
The Arbovirus Surveillance Program at the Texas Department of State Health Services is designed to detect the presence of arboviruses in mosquitoes prior to the development of human disease. Routine arboviral studies are conducted on mosquitoes from May through November each year, with some flexibility due to patterns of detection. This surveillance time period has been satisfactory for detection of arboviruses in Texas. Effective March 31, 2013, Arthropod identification will no longer be performed at the Texas Department of State Health Services Laboratory. Arthropods of medical concern should be addressed to your primary care physician.
Surveillance program:
  • Monitors vector activities involving mosquito-borne diseases such as encephalitis
  • Local Health Agencies
  • DSHS Regional Offices
  • Arbovirus Surveillance Submitter Network
