Poison Epidemiology
Our goal is to identify and prevent poisonings in Texas. A poison is anything that can harm your body if you eat, drink, breathe, inject, or touch too much of it.
Some common poisonings include:
- Taking too much prescription medications
- Inhaling pesticides
- Snake bites
- Illicit drug use
We track poisonings reported in Texas by:
- Working with the Texas Poison Center Network (TPCN)
- Investigating clusters of poisonous exposures and related illnesses
- Monitoring controlled substance overdose surveillance data
Find more information about preventing accidental poisonings from CDC.gov.
