Internship Applications

Application Submission Time Frames

Internships are awarded on a rolling basis. Qualified Blue Ribbon candidates may be invited to interview with the internship preceptor and DSHS Internship coordinator. Applicants will be reviewed until all positions have been filled.

Applications are processed each semester during the following time frames.

Winter/Spring Semester

January 1st – May 31st

Applications are accepted between October 1st and December 15th.

Summer Semester

June 1st – August 31st

Applications are accepted between March 15th and May 25th.

Fall Semester

September 1st – December 31st

Applications are accepted between July 1st and September 1st.


Application Requirements

Blue Ribbon Internships

Please submit all application documents to Internships@dshs.texas.gov.

  1. Completed DSHS Internship Application
  2. Copy of resume or CV
  3. Letter of Interest that details why you are qualified for the internship, describes relevant experience, and explains how the internship will further academic and/or professional goals
    • In the email, please identify the project(s) you wish to apply to in order of preference.
    • A separate letter of interest is required for each project.
  4. Two letters of recommendation
    • One recommendation should be from an employment supervisor. The second can be from an academic adviser, a faculty member, or a sponsor of a student organization in which you participate.
    • Please have references email Internships@dshs.texas.gov their letter of recommendation directly.
      • In the subject line of their email, please instruct references to write "Letter of Recommendation and APPLICANT NAME".

Standard Internships

  1. Completed DSHS Internship Application
  2. Documents requested in the detailed project description.
  3. Please submit all application documents to the contact listed in the detailed project description.

Request an internship

If there is not an internship available in the program you wish to work in, please follow the instructions to request an internship.

  1. Completed DSHS Internship Application
  2. Copy of resume or CV
  3. Letter of Request
    Include:
    • Why you are interested in a specific public health subject
    • What you are interested in doing
    • Relevant background, experience and/or interests
    • How the internship will further your academic and/or professional goals
    • Why the DSHS program should develop an internship for you
