Northwest Texas

Most of DSHS Northwest Texas Public Health Region 1 (PHR 1) is rural and frontier. DSHS Northwest Texas has sole jurisdiction over 36 of the 44 counties within the region. These 36 counties cover 43,000 square miles, with an estimated population of 323,747.

DSHS Northwest Texas is a hub for agriculture. We are home to dairies, ranches, wind energy and more. You will also find the second largest canyon in the U.S., Palo Duro Canyon, and the official Texas Bison Herd in Caprock Canyons State Park. 

The mission of DSHS Northwest Texas is to support the health of our communities. We provide public health consultation, education, promotion, prevention, treatment, and regulation.
