Texas Launches Viral Hepatitis Elimination Plan

A Major Step Toward a Hepatitis-Free Texas

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is proud to announce the release of the Texas Viral Hepatitis Elimination Plan, a statewide strategy to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public-health threat.

This new plan outlines a coordinated approach to:

  • Reduce new infections by 90 percent
  • Reduce hepatitis-related deaths by 65 percent

Guided by a vision of a hepatitis-free Texas, the plan focuses on prevention, testing, treatment, and education.

Despite major progress, viral hepatitis remains one of the leading causes of liver disease and cancer in our state. The new plan builds on partnerships across healthcare, community organizations, and policy leaders to reverse these trends and improve liver health for all Texans.

Key Areas of Focus

The Texas Viral Hepatitis Elimination Plan centers around four main pillars:

  1. Prevention – Expanding vaccination and harm reduction services.
  2. Care and Treatment – Increasing access to affordable and effective hepatitis treatment.
  3. Data and Surveillance – Strengthening tracking to understand better and respond to trends.
  4. Policy – Supporting evidence-based laws and programs that promote liver health.
