Industrial Radiographer Certification - Radiation Control Program

The DSHS Radiation Control Program certifies individuals to practice industrial radiography within the State of Texas. To become certified individuals must meet the necessary requirements of classroom and on-the-job training, as well as completion of the required examinations.

An explanation of the certification process and links to the application forms to obtain or renew your industrial radiographer certification are located here.

Beginning October 2020, the examinations will be in a computer-based testing format at testing centers located throughout the United States.  To register for an examination, please review the Registration Process Overview and visit https://www.crcpd.org or https://home.pearsonvue.com/crcpd for more information.

Update on Covid-19 Waivers for DSHS Industrial Radiographer renewal applications

On April 10, 2020 the Office of the Governor approved a temporary suspension to the industrial radiographer renewal rules in 25 TAC §289.255(h)(3)(B) requiring a certification exam for a certification renewal during the COVID-19 disaster response. During this time the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) issued “timely renewal” approvals to those individuals who still needed to take the certification exam until DSHS was able to resume offering certification testing to the renewal applicants.

On July 19, 2021, the Office of the Governor terminated the temporary suspension of the DSHS statutes and rules related to the COVID-19 disaster.

Effective September 1, 2021, DSHS will terminate the “timely renewal” approvals for industrial radiographers who have not yet completed the certification exams.

What this Means for License Holders:

Effective September 1, 2021, the “timely renewal” approval letters will expire, and an expired industrial radiographer certification will be treated as an expired certification.

If you need to take the certification exam in order to complete your certification renewal, please contact IndRadCertification@DSHS.Texas.gov regarding scheduling an exam. Pearson Vue is conducting the industrial radiographer certification exams through one of their online testing centers.

Industrial Radiographer COVID-19 Renewal Exam Waiver

April 13, 2020

Due to the current COVID-19 state of disaster in Texas, the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) requested and the Office of the Governor granted the following waiver:

Industrial Radiography Personnel License Renewal Extension

In accordance with section 418.016 of the Texas Government code, the Office of the Governor granted DSHS’s request to suspend 25 TAC §289.255(h)(3)(B). This waiver will allow industrial radiography personnel whose license has expired after March 13, 2020, to timely renew their license without taking the industrial radiography exam. The testing requirement for renewals will be suspended for the remainder of the governor’s declared emergency for COVID-19 or until DSHS resumes administering the industrial radiography exams. This rule suspension applies only to industrial radiographer license renewal applicants that have timely submitted the renewal applications and fees.

DSHS will issue a “timely renewal” letter to industrial radiographers who have not completed testing but have submitted timely applications and fees to renew their license. The “timely renewal” letter will allow radiographers to continue operating under their license until the waiver of the rule section is terminated and the testing requirements can be fulfilled.

On March 19, 2020, Governor Greg Abbott announced a series of Executive Orders relating to COVID-19 preparedness and mitigation. The orders “limit public gatherings and help reduce exposure for people across the state.”

Due to these Executive Orders and the responsibility of the DSHS Consumer Protection Division to ensure public health, the Industrial Radiographer certification examinations have been cancelled through April 30, 2020.

You are encouraged to periodically check this website for updates and information related to the certification testing schedules, and any certifications that may expire during this timeframe.
